In my lifetime, Pop music was at its peak when names like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake ruled the world. There were many other less successful members of this bubble-gum genre that gave us a stream of one hit wonders and gladly welcomed their 15 minutes. I feel like Emo rock then had its time along with a lot of hip-hop but ladies and gentleman, Pop is back! time has shown that humanity is just repeating itself. We go through the same phases, tweaking a bit, to not be completely embarrassed by our lack of originality but consistently following in our father’s footsteps. Pop music has hit me baby one more time.

This is probably one of the funniest videos I’ve ever seen, but it’s the not the first home video that I have seen that has made me hurt with laughter on youtube. Sites like Google and Youtube have given everyone a new pass-time along with new verbs to the English language. I’ve heard many many times “just google it” or “youtube it.” 

Videos on youtube become so popular that you can easily speak to many different friends about a video and they’ll know exactly what you’re talking about. Youtube is like one big competition for 15 minutes of fame. People don’t even watch TV anymore. I know that I have sat around with my friends searching on youtube for constant entertainment and you can find some crazy stuff. 

The web is making it so easy to find ANYTHING out there.

Electronic music is now the new thing. People who would have never associated the word “house” with a type of music rather than a structure are now becoming fans of the latest wave of alternative electronic music. During highschool, I would only go to the Roxy on Sunset to see rock bands, but when my friend invited me to go see the very popular and one of my personal favorites, MSTRKRFT, I couldn’t turn it down. I was so intrigued by the thought of hearing electro in such a small venue and on a stage where musicians with guitars usually stand, not with head phones and in front of a laptop. When we got there the line was down the street and luckily I saw someone I knew right at the front that let us cut. When finally let inside, I had never seen the Roxy so packed. Every inch was filled with someone hands in the air, bumping their whole body to the music. It was an insane night and I was amazed by how much support these non-europeans were giving them.

Another example is the Daft Punk mania that has made its way over to the States as well. Daft Punk has been around since the 80s. They reached significant popularity in the 90s in Europe, but since their performance at Coachella in 2006, it seems like the whole world loves Daft Punk. I see Daft Punk bumper stickers now, and they jh=ust released their live album due probably to their sold out concerts all over the world. I have seen them twice and I can most definitely say that Daft Punk, Coachella 2006 was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Everyone was losing their mind on how great they were. It definitely went down in history.

So the electro trend has definitely caught on. Clubs in L.A. even have electro themed nights. Hip Hop seemed to always be the choice before but not anymore. Names like Boyz Noize, Toxic Avenger, D.I.M, Steve Aoki, Surkin, Digitalism, and many many many more are coming to town!

I convinced a friend of mine to come with me on my quest for juicy lobster in the heart of glendale, and we were off. After a good 10 minutes past where I thought the restaurant would be, I realized that Google maps had lied and this Red Lobster did not exist anymore, and though I was quite disappointed, I was in shock by the vast amount of choices that were present before me. I drove down the street and passed THREE Pizza Huts on the same street! Let’s not forget about the Starbucks, Yoshinoya Beef Bowl, Chilis, Taco Bell… Big bright colorful corporate signs were all around me and I couldn’t help but try to rebel against this american culture, or should i say non-culture, screaming “I’m in corporate hell!” as my natively French friend chuckled beside me. Though this lack of funk, lack of soul, of finesse, of beauty, my physiological needs took hold and I settled to eat at Sizzler. We walked in and didn’t even know how it worked. I made my way over to the cash register and asked the cashier where I was supposed to go and she glared at me, either saying what a snob or what an idiot. I ended up ordering from her and I was given a number AAAND the freedom to sit wherever I pleased. Families of 12 or 24 sat at the immense tables designed especially for them. The food was cold and tastless, but Hey! you get free ice cream at the end Isn’t corporate America great?
